“I’ve been thinking a lot about the energy of the universe. And if energy can’t ever be created or destroyed, only transferred, what do you think happens to people’s energy once they die?”
This book will probably hold a special place in my heart forever because it incorporates two of my favorite things – music and science (astro-physics to be precise!) It is also a YA lover’s dream! “My heart and other black holes” is young, fresh and full of heart. Aysel is a 17 year old high schooler who’s Dad has committed a terrible crime. Now, 3 years later, she has decided that she wants to kill herself. While online, she meets another local boy who has his own reasons for contemplating suicide and they decide to do it together. Once they connect in person, the ‘black slug’ that lives inside of Aysel’s heart and stomach begins to disappear. Roman, her suicide partner, has shown her that there are still things left to live for! With her love for classical music and physics, Aysel explains her feelings in a surprising and unique way throughout the story. I finished this book having a greater appreciation for life and those around me – the general message being that no matter how bleak life may seem, there is always potential for light to escape the pull of your black hole.
For many obvious reasons, I paired this book with Angel’s Envy Kentucky Straight Bourbon Port Finish. One reason is the take on the name – angels only seem appropriate for a book where two young people consider leaving it all. Another reason is for this bourbon’s nose and taste. Much like the story, it is sweet, with notes of vanilla and maple syrup. Both ‘My Heart and Other Black Holes’ and Angel’s Envy are two things I had a hard time putting down 😉
Angel’s Envy Kentucky Straight Bourbon – Port Finish ranges in cost from $65-$85.
It is easy to drink for the bourbon novice and a complex enjoyment for the bourbon ninja.
